Street Hockey Goalie Pads

Street hockey is a game that is enjoyed by young and old alike. Whether seasoned ice hockey players looking to keep sharp in the off season, or a group of neighbourhood kids killing time after school, street hockey is a grand tradition that embodies all that sports are really supposed to be all about. There are no million dollar contracts on the line, no trading of players or commercial breaks, simply a group of people enjoying a little fresh air, exercise, and sportsmanship.

However, that doesn’t mean that street hockey is completely removed from ice hockey, or that certain safety precautions aren’t necessary. While not as risky as ice hockey in terms of puck impact, there is still a need for some basic gear, and street hockey goalie pads certainly fall into that category. Of course, street hockey goalie pads are more than just a safety item. They provide a broad, flat surface to block the incoming puck or ball from the net, which is, after all, the whole purpose of the goalie.

Goalie pads have not always been a part of hockey. In fact, in the early days of the game, wearing specialized equipment to aid the goalie in blocking goals was against the rules. The first recorded instance of the use of goalie pads, in 1891, actually involved the use of cricket pads. By 1896, cricket pads were used for the first time in the Stanley cup playoffs, and after that, the use of pads on goalies became widespread.

Street hockey goalie pads come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, and can be as simple or as ornate as the goalie would like them to be. For a casual kid’s game in a neighborhood street, a set of small, inexpensive department store pads would likely do the job. However, street hockey is, for some, a serious sport, and with serious sports some serious price tags. Large, adult sized goalie pads can be one of the more expensive pieces of hockey equipment, with prices well into the hundreds of dollars. However, for performance and confidence, the price tag is a small obstacle.
